Lenn Hastings, the Humanitarian Coordinator in the occupied Palestinian territories, stated on Sunday, June 11, 2023, that hundreds of Palestinians in occupied Jerusalem are at risk of forced eviction by Israeli occupation forces.
In a tweet on her official Twitter page, the UN coordinator said, "Elderly members of the Sab Laban family may be evicted from their home, where they have lived since 1954 in the Old City of Jerusalem."
She added, "Hundreds of Palestinians are at risk of forced eviction in East Jerusalem. This destructive practice, which contradicts international law, must end."
Israeli occupation forces have set a final eviction date for the Sab Laban family on Sunday, June 11, 2023, in favor of settlers.
Last Thursday, the European Union office tweeted on its official page, stating that "around 150 Palestinian families in East Jerusalem are threatened with the risk of eviction and forced displacement" by Israeli occupation forces.
The European Union reiterated its opposition to "Israeli settlement policy and the measures taken in this context, including forced evictions."
The Sab Laban family's home is located in the Al-Khaldiyah neighborhood of the Old City, directly overlooking the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Mustafa Sab Laban, a seventy-year-old citizen, and his wife Nora reside in the house. Several years ago, settlers seized an upper part of the building and another section, while the Sab Laban family's house remained surrounded by settlements on all sides.
It is worth mentioning that a case was filed against the Sab Laban family in an attempt to forcibly evict them from their home in 1978. The family became entangled in legal battles with the Israeli occupation and settlers, fighting seven legal battles, including a victory in 2000, which allowed them to remain in the house.
In 2010, Israeli occupation forces transferred the property to the settler organization "Ateret Cohanim," which began filing cases against the family in an attempt to forcibly remove them.
In 2016, the Israeli occupation court issued a decision prohibiting the presence of the children and grandchildren in the house to prevent them from claiming protection rights as a third generation, while allowing the couple to remain in the house.
