Churches Following the Western Calendar Begin Christmas Celebrations

Christian churches that follow the Western calendar on Wednesday began celebrations for Christmas, which falls on Thursday, as the city of Bethlehem donned its festive attire to mark the start of the holiday season.

Scenes of joy and celebration will unfold in Manger Square with the arrival of various scout groups and the official reception of the procession of Patriarch Pierbattista Pizzaballa at noon, in accordance with the long-established Status Quo. Leading the reception will be PLO Executive Committee member and head of the Presidential Higher Committee for Church Affairs Ramzi Khoury, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Hani Al-Hayek, Bethlehem Governor Mohammad Abu Alia, Bethlehem Mayor Maher Qanawati, Director-General of Bethlehem Governorate Police Brig. Murad Qandah, Bethlehem Commander Col. Ibrahim Abu Khashk, alongside clergy members and parishioners.

Bethlehem Mayor Maher Qanawati said the city, after two difficult years, is regaining its joy and spirit, stressing that despite the wounds, Bethlehem remains a beacon that will not be extinguished.

On the occasion, he called on countries around the world to stand with the Palestinian people amid the suffering caused by the occupation’s crimes in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including Jerusalem.
