The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, said that Israel cannot veto the right of Palestinians to self-determination.
He said during a joint press conference in Brussels that the UN has repeatedly recognized the right to self-determination of the Palestinian people, stressing that no one can deny or oppose that right.
In press statements following the EU foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels, Borrell said that negotiations for a two-state solution in the Middle East will continue, irrespective of what Israel wants.
He stressed that if Israel did not want that solution, it would be difficult for it to secure a place in peace negotiations, stressing that Israel’s position does not preclude others from doing so.
The EU High Representative stressed that there would be sufficient bargaining power for the international community if it could come together, propose and agree on a solution.
