Tel Aviv – PNN /
The Israeli Broadcasting Authority reported that Benjamin Netanyahu's government is taking steps to ensure that the upcoming UN Security Council mandate for the force to be deployed in the Gaza Strip is broad, allowing it to act with force against Hamas with the aim of disarming the group.
The Israeli moves come ahead of the expected vote on the matter at the UN Security Council on Monday.
According to officials cited by the Israeli broadcaster, Israel is demanding that the mandate granted to the international stabilization force be under Chapter VII, making its responsibility to enforce peace even through the use of force, rather than merely maintaining peace under Chapter VI.
Chapter VII grants the international force extensive powers, as its formation does not require the consent of all parties. It also allows the force to maintain order and security through military means, use weapons to protect civilians, disarm armed groups, and undertake initiatives on the ground to prevent any escalation.
The Israeli broadcaster noted that the Security Council’s decision regarding the authority of the international force will determine which countries will participate.
It is worth noting that U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the arrival of the international stabilization force in Gaza is imminent and described the situation as "going well so far" under the ceasefire.
The United States has drafted the resolution for the international force, which is before the UN Security Council, based on Trump’s 20-point plan to end the war in Gaza. This force is expected to replace the Israeli army immediately upon entering the Strip.
