BETHLEHEM, West Bank / PNN /

Israeli authorities on Monday prevented prominent Palestinian activist Munther Amira from crossing the Allenby Bridge border crossing into Jordan, disrupting his planned participation in a series of human rights events in Europe, according to organizers and activists.

Amira, a well-known advocate of nonviolent resistance and community activism in the occupied West Bank, was traveling to Jordan before continuing to Italy and France, where he was scheduled to take part in public events focusing on the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories.

According to organizers, Israeli military authorities detained Amira at the crossing and informed him that he was not permitted to travel despite holding a valid visa and the necessary travel documents.

Amira was expected to participate on June 24 in Rome in the presentation of a report prepared by Mediterranea Saving Humans documenting alleged human rights violations in the Masafer Yatta area of the southern West Bank. He was also scheduled to attend a series of public meetings and advocacy events in France.

Organizers condemned the decision to prevent Amira from traveling, describing it as a violation of freedom of movement and an attempt to restrict the work of peaceful human rights defenders.

Amira is one of the most prominent Palestinian grassroots activists advocating nonviolent resistance to Israeli occupation policies. Over the years, he has participated in numerous peaceful demonstrations and international advocacy campaigns highlighting issues related to settlements, land confiscation and human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories.

The Israeli authorities had not immediately issued a public statement explaining the reasons for preventing Amira from crossing the border.

Human rights organizations have repeatedly raised concerns over travel restrictions imposed on Palestinian activists, journalists and civil society representatives, arguing that such measures limit their ability to engage with international institutions and audiences.
