Brussels / PNN –
In a poignant celebration filled with symbolism and hope, the European Parliament marked the Christmas season with a special event hosted by the Embassy of Palestine to the EU, Belgium, and Luxembourg. The occasion was attended by Ambassador Dr Amal Jado Shakaa, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, Bethlehem Mayor Anton Salman, and Ambassador Amira Hanania, representing the Higher Presidential Committee for Church Affairs.
During the event, the city of Bethlehem presented the European Parliament with a symbolic nativity cradle, a gift embodying the message of peace and hope that the holy city represents. The gesture also highlighted Bethlehem’s resilience in the face of the pain and hardship caused by occupation.
In her address, Ambassador Jado Shakaa emphasised that, for the second consecutive year, Palestine was unable to celebrate Christmas amidst the grief and restrictions imposed on Bethlehem
“Despite the sorrow and hardship, we continue to transform this suffering into a message of hope and resilience,” she said. “This cradle, brought from the heart of Bethlehem, symbolises our unwavering commitment to freedom and justice—for the children of Palestine and for the world.”
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola expressed gratitude to Bethlehem for the symbolic gift and reiterated the Parliament’s ongoing support for the Palestinian people. She called for a ceasefire, humanitarian access, and progress towards a two-state solution.
“This season reminds us of our shared commitment to peace and hope for Palestine and its children,” Metsola said.
Bethlehem Mayor Anton Salman expressed pride in presenting the nativity cradle, noting that despite the city’s struggles, it remains a global symbol of peace and love.
The event featured a moving artistic programme, with Tunisian opera singer Amal Saddiqi captivating the audience with Christmas carols that brought the spirit of Bethlehem to Brussels. Palestinian artist Ismail Mattar from Gaza also showcased powerful artwork depicting Jesus and Mary on the walls of the separation barrier, highlighting the injustices faced by the Palestinian people.
The Palestinian delegation, attending in full, underscored the importance of the occasion in fostering solidarity with the Palestinian people and amplifying their message of hope and justice to the world.
