Tel Aviv – PNN – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer held a reassurance session for ministers on Sunday, ahead of today’s UN Security Council vote on a U.S. draft resolution regarding a ceasefire in Gaza and the twenty points presented by U.S. President Donald Trump.

This comes following statements made by Israeli officials in recent days, reported by Hebrew media, expressing concern about the draft resolution—particularly the clause related to the possible establishment of a Palestinian state in the future.

The Hebrew website Ynet reported last Friday that unnamed political officials said the U.S. draft includes provisions “uncomfortable for Israel.” Among these, in addition to the pathway toward establishing a Palestinian state, is a clause that would strip Israel of its right to veto which countries may send forces to the Gaza Strip.

Facing harsh criticism within the government, according to Israel’s Channel 12 on Monday, Netanyahu held a meeting on Sunday with the heads of parliamentary factions, also attended by Dermer—who resigned only a week ago—aimed at “calming” the ministers.

According to the report, the meeting again demonstrated that Dermer is managing the entire diplomatic portfolio, including sensitive issues with the Americans. During the discussion, Dermer presented the expected Security Council resolution to the ministers and attempted to reassure them on Netanyahu’s behalf. He told them: “We have faced more serious precedents regarding a Palestinian state that were accepted by the Security Council,” adding: “This proposal is a softening of the language, not an escalation.”

According to the U.S. draft resolution to be voted on later today, “after the Palestinian Authority faithfully implements its reform program and progress is made in rehabilitating Gaza, conditions may finally be conducive to a credible pathway toward Palestinian self-determination and statehood. The United States will launch a dialogue between Israel and the Palestinians to agree on a political horizon for peaceful and prosperous coexistence.”

Dermer and Netanyahu emphasized to the ministers the importance of the phrase “may lead to,” clarifying that the resolution does not guarantee the establishment of a Palestinian state, but only suggests the possibility—conditional on the Palestinian Authority implementing all required reforms. In other words, according to the same source, it is unlikely to happen.
