On Tuesday, Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid attacked Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, calling it “the most extreme” in Israel’s history. He criticized the government for accepting the UN Security Council resolution on Gaza under U.S. pressure while abandoning plans to annex the occupied West Bank.

Lapid made the comments in a post on the U.S.-based platform X, responding to the Security Council decision to solidify the ceasefire in Gaza according to U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan.

Netanyahu, along with National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, had repeatedly expressed Israel’s intention to annex the West Bank and impose sovereignty, prompting widespread regional condemnation. On September 26, President Trump publicly stated that he would not allow Israel to annex the West Bank.

Lapid said: “Under U.S. pressure, Netanyahu announced this morning his acceptance of the Security Council resolution, which includes the principle of unifying the territories.”

He added: “For years, Netanyahu tried to separate Gaza from the West Bank—a grave strategic mistake. It is good that the Americans put an end to it.”

Lapid further noted that “the most extreme right-wing government in the country’s history is officially abandoning annexation and defining principles for cooperation with the Palestinian Authority,” without providing further details.

The UN resolution, numbered 2803, welcomed President Trump’s 20-point plan to end the conflict in Gaza, issued on September 29, 2025, according to the UN website. Washington proposed the resolution to deploy a multinational force in Gaza under the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, effective since October 10.
