Sources close to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Yedioth Ahronoth that he is considering amending the Official Investigation Committee Law to remove the clause that allows the committee to issue personal recommendations against public officials.

The proposed amendment also includes an alternative option to limit the committee’s powers, preventing it from issuing any personal recommendations against specific individuals once its work concludes.

Under the draft proposal currently under discussion, the committee would not be authorized to make findings or recommendations against officials or public figures — including senior members of the security establishment and elected leaders. Instead, its mandate would be confined to institutional and structural recommendations, without directly implicating individuals.

This move comes after a ruling by Israel’s Supreme Court requiring the government to announce the formation of an official state commission of inquiry into the events of October 7, 2023, by mid-November. The decision has prompted Netanyahu to intensify his focus on the issue in recent days, holding a series of preliminary meetings on the committee’s establishment.

In a sharp political response, Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid condemned Netanyahu’s efforts to amend the law, saying:

“All of Netanyahu’s hysterical attempts to escape responsibility for the worst massacre in our history will not succeed.”

Lapid added that Netanyahu was prime minister on October 7, and that only an official state inquiry could thoroughly examine the reasons behind his lack of preparedness, his disregard of prior warnings, and his failure to fulfill his duties.
