Jerusalem / PNN – Chief Justice of Palestine Sheikh Taysir Rajab Al Tamimi announced Wednesday that all Sharia courts would be open tomorrow night for the sighting of the moon that signals which day the month of Ramadan will begin.
All Islamic courts in the provinces of the West Bank, including Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip will be open Thursday, 29 Shaaban 1430 AH, corresponding to the twentieth of August, 2009.
In order to be considered legitimate, the crescent moon must be judged based on evidence obtained in the courts throughout Palestine. A certificate will be issued by each so that a declaration can be made for the day that the month of fasting and charity will begin.
The Chief Justice of Palestine said that legal bodies of the judiciary in the Islamic world are in unanimous agreement of the necessity for coordination. A unified approach is crucial, he said, to mark the beginning of the holy month.
In Palestine, as in most countries in the Islamic world, a scientific approach is used. The moon must materialize. If it does not, the date will change, but it is expected that Ramadan will begin Sunday.
