Ramallah / PNN – An Israeli military court is trying a leader of the Palestinian nonviolent resistance for organizing just that; nonviolent resistance to occupation.
Azmi Al Shoukhi is the General Secretary of the Palestinian Popular Committees and he, along with four fellow nonviolent organizers are being tried in Israeli military court. The arrests took place during the weekly nonviolent demonstrations in southern Bethlehem, cushioned between the killings of two Palestinian demonstrators in western Ramallah’s Bil’in and Na’lin.
The Ofar Military Court, built on Ramallah lands, is hearing the cases of several nonviolent resistance leaders on Tuesday.
Al Shoukhi left after several days in Israeli prison when his family paid 20,000 NIS in ransom for his temporary release. He was arrested for participating in a nonviolent demonstration against the Israeli Wall and settlements in the Wes Bank. The others were held until between 15 and 25 thousand shekels were paid.
Mahmoud Zoahra, spokesperson for the Popular Committee against the Wall and Settlements may be the most well known of those held at the same time, along with his brother Mohammad Briggia who is another leader of the nonviolent Palestinian resistance in southern Bethlehem.
They marched on World Labor Day and were taken away.
