On Friday 20th April, hundreds of Israeli soldiers gathered beneath the Western Wall in Jerusalem in remembrance of the murdering of 6 million jews by Nazi Germany during the Second World War.
However, in spite of the event's solemn occasion the participants chose to strike a decidedly militaristic tone as one PNN correspondent witnessed the soldiers performing a military salute before listening to one of their officers detailed explanation of how the memory of the holocaust still shapes Israelis' relationship to the Western Wall and continues to remind them of its importance. He then lectured on the importance of defending and maintaining control over the Wall.
The Western Wall lies within the compound of the Jewish quarter of the old city in Jerusalem and since it was captured by the Israelis in the 1967 war, has remained a contested area and one of constant friction. A paper published by the PA Ministry of Information in 2010, stated that the wall has no Jewish origin and is actually the Western wall of al Aqsa Mosque, a place sacred to all Muslims.
