On Monday, August 20th, eight universities in Israel have filed petition in the High Court against recognizing Ariel College as a full-fledged university, Israeli news websites report.

Among the signatories are the Tel Aviv University, Hebrew University, Haifa University, Weizmann Institute and other higher education institutes based in Israel.

Earlier in July, the Judea and Samaria Council for Higher Education voted to recognize Ariel as a full-fledged university. The decision has drawn international criticism as Ariel College is located beyond Green Line, in occupied territory of the West Bank, and it is widely considered an illegal outpost.

The petitioners also called upon the military not to grant Ariel a university status. According to Israeli law, the council's decision needs approval of the Central Command Chief.
