The Israeli military has placed a new anti-missile RADAR defense system – the Iron Dome – near Tel Aviv after warnings from military and security officials that in "the next stage of fighting, Tel Aviv will be the main target of missiles."
An Israeli newspaper, Yedioth Ahronoth, reported that Israel is preparing for a scenario in which "missiles will fall in the center of Israel." With this in mind, the Israeli military is distributing the Iron Dome in the Gush Dan Area around Tel Aviv to provide protection from the medium-range missiles. The same newspaper said that the military also installed an Iron Doom in Haifa, as well as in areas close to Jerusalem. "The Great Defense," as it is described by the Israeli military, includes "Arrow 2" and "Magic Wand" defense systems which are still being developed.
Yedioth Ahronoth reported the Israeli military's assertion that, although Palestinian organizations and Hezbollah have not fired missiles at centrally located Tel Aviv, these groups have missiles capable of reaching Tel Aviv and that Hezbollah has the ability to reach any area in Israel. The report highlighted the military's claim that Hamas's arsenal contains numerous missiles with the ability to hit Tel Aviv and that Tel Aviv will be a main target for missiles from the Gaza Strip.
In 2009, the chief of Military Intelligence, Major General Amos Yadlin, revealed that Hamas test-launched a missile with a range of 60 kilometers from Gaza Strip. Hamas has focused on manufacturing this missile in Syria and Iran. It is possible that this missile could hit Ben-Gurion Airport and Tel Aviv.
