On Friday, 29th June, Chief Palestinian Negotiator, Saeb Erekat, confirmed that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will meet the Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Shaul Mofaz in Ramallah on Sunday, 1st July.
According to Al-Ayam Palestinian newspaper, if Mofaz brought positive answers from the Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu regarding Abbas request to release 132 Palestinian prisoners who were arrested before the year 1994, and allow the admission of military equipments for the security services through Jordan, then it will allow the convening of another meeting between Abbas and Netanyahu to resume negotiations.
Palestinian sources said that Netanyahu still refusing the request to release all the prisoners, yet he agreed on the release of 25 prisoners on batches, but after meeting with Abbas.
According to the United States, the new government coalition in Israel allows for Netanyahu to make steps toward peace with Palestinians. Israel must do steps to gain the trust of Palestinians to resume negotiations.
The Palestinian authority insists that resuming negotiations depends on Israel's approval to cease settlement, accept a Palestinian state based on 1967 borders as a condition for the two-state solution.
