Israeli Military Intelligence: Assad will stay in Syria for years

In light of continued violence in Syria, the Israeli newspaper Maariv said in a report on the situation that the Syrian president has the ability to survive the popular uprising against him for years.

The paper quoted an Israeli Military Intelligence report as saying that the regime of Bashar al Assad has remained intact until now and that there are several factors allowing him to maintain power for years to come.

The report pointed to the fact that the most important of these factors was Russian and Iranian military and political support, and likewise noted that the silence of the international community and its failure to take a firm stance against Assad's regime was an additional factor for his remaining in power.
