Iran Enters Nuclear Talks With Western Powers

On Wednesday 23rd May, a meeting was held between representatives of six world powers in Baghdad to discuss Iran’s nuclear program.
The meeting, which was held between Iran's negotiators Ali Baqeri and Helga Schmid and the deputy of EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton; who lead the negotiations heading the five permanent UN Security Council members; US, France, Britain, Russia and China, with the addition of Germany, made demands that Iran would respond and adhere to a step by step package based on their nuclear program.
The package. which included five areas of nuclear and non nuclear corporation alongside a proposal submitted by the Iranian delegation, was designed to help to improve confidence with the Western countries.
The Iranian proposal was based on the principles of the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in which it offered steps that would be discussed in accordance with the steps provided by the Western powers.
Although there was no clear outcome from the meeting, Bageri and Schmid are drafting an agreement on the coorpoeration between Tehran and the west prior to the talks which will resume today.
