The Mufti of Jerusalem, Sheikh Mohammad Hussein, has warned of the serious consequences of the Israeli plan to divide al-Aqsa mosque.
The plan would divide the mosque in the same way as the Ibrahimi mosque in Hebron.
Sheikh Hussein said in a press release issued on Monday 6th August, "The calls from some of the Israeli officials and leaders to implement this plan show serious escalations against al-Aqsa Mosque."
He added, "Lately, Jerusalem has witnessed Israeli escalations and attacks that target the Islamic feature of the mosque and threatens its existence.
"Israel aims to make serious changes...to confiscate the mosque and control it, and therefore to jewify Jerusalem and deport its citizens."
There are worries that the targeting of al-Aqsa mosque could lead to a regional war, following the Mufti's call to Arab and Islamic countries to intervene immediately to save the mosque.
A Knesset member stated that Israelis are to be allowed to enter into the mosque on specific days, with Muslims allowed to enter the mosque on other days.
