Discussion about the Bethlehem Industrial Park:
Social and Economic Development in the West Bank
with Elie Shehadeh
Economic and social development in the Occupied Palestinian Territory cannot occur until Israel ends its occupation and justice is achieved for the Palestinian people. Numerous studies, some by the Alternative Information Center (AIC), have demonstrated this to be true.
In the meantime, however, local and international attempts are made to foster improved socioeconomic conditions, even under Israeli occupation. And one of these attempts is the innovative Bethlehem Multi-disciplinary Industrial Park (BMIP).
Created in June 2009 as a joint Palestinian-French initiative, BMIP aims to encourage sustainable economic growth, an "incubator" for young Palestinian graduates and high quality training. BMIP is also the first "eco-park" in Palestine.
What is the reality of BMIP today and what lessons can be learned from its experience? What types of socio-economic progress are possible under the current conditions of occupation? These questions and more will be answered in this special evening.
Saturday 11 August is also the opening of the AIC library and bookshop! Find publications about various Palestinian organizations, browse through our selection of books, films and maps related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict...and even pick up fiction books for when you need a break! The library will be open with the AICafe events (Tuesday, Thursday and Saturdays from 7-10pm) and Monday-Thursday and Saturday in the mornings.
