Comunità Papa Giovanni XXIII-Condivisione fra i Popoli Launches EU-Funded Summer Camp for School Children in Hebron

Outlook

PNN

The 1st of July 2012, the Summer Camp for children will begin in the village of Al Mufaqarah, a small village in the South Hebron Hills, close to At-Tuwani village.

It will take place in Al Mufaqarah to stress the rights of the children to keep living in their land, despite the lack of human facilities like electricity and the access to water.

The camp will last for two weeks and will be attended by about 130 children from several villages of the Masafer Yatta area: Al Mugaqarah, At-Tuwani, Tuba, Magayr Al Abeed. Every morning trainers will facilitate games and several educational and artistic activities for children, with the aim of promoting peace education within communities and enhance conflict transformation skills through the philosophy of knowing 'the other' better by means of dialogue. A one day trip to visit the city of Tulkarem is planned. Children will receive also T-shirts and hats.

"This year the summer camp has two purposes" says Hafez Huraini, leader of the Popular Resistance Committee of South Hebron Hills, "First: to create chances of encounter where children can play and have positive experiences.

They can feel free, even for a few hours, from the pressure that the occupation exercises daily on our lives. Second: to increase the real unity among communities in South Hebron Hills, threatened by the Israeli displacement policies, and to enforce their commitment in the nonviolence resistance."

The summer camp will end on July 14th with the Festival of Nonviolent Resistance, a celebration which pays tribute to the people of the South Hebron Hills who chose to act in nonviolent ways against daily human rights violation.
