The head of the National Committee to Resist the Wall and Settlements, Walid Assaf, is preparing to go to the International Criminal Court to file a lawsuit on behalf of the local population against the occupation authorities in order to prevent the destruction of the village of Khan al Ahmar.
On August 1, the Israeli High Court decided to postpone the final decision on the evacuation of the Palestinian population from the Bedouin village, after residents rejected a proposal to relocate them taken by the occupation authorities.
However, a decision of the courts will now be made this Thursday, and inhabitants are fearing that the outcome could give occupation authorities the green light to demolish Khan Al-Ahmar and displace its inhabitants.
Assaf told Voice of Palestine radio on Wednesday morning that the popular opposition movement on the ground will continue and the determination of the citizens in Khan Al Ahmar will only be strengthened in order to confront the occupation authority’s plans aimed at emptying Area “C”.
He also explained that lawyers want an environmental report introduced to the court which identifies serious health risks posed at the site that the people are due to be relocated to. These concerns relate to pools of sewage in the area of Aqabat Jabr.
The significance of the findings of such a report could be crucial to the ultimate outcome of any legal challenge.
