Ahmad Yaghi, 25, was killed along the Gaza-Israel border fence while 90 others were wounded yesterday from Israeli Occupation Forces’ use of live ammunition against demonstrators. 130 other protestors were also wounded, but not directly from live ammunition.
One other person died in a nearby hospital from wounds sustained at the protest.
The March of Return demonstrations are in their 18th week against the Gaza Strip blockade by Israel and Egypt. The blockade started after Hamas took control of the strip in 2007. Now, peace talks have been re-established among Egypt, the Palestinian Authority, Hamas and Israel.
Peace talks are yet to be successful in resolving the blockade against the strip. But with US aid to UNRWA cut and the continued siege on the area, Hamas may need to finally relinquish some of its control for the sake of the Palestinians in Gaza.
