Paraguay president intends to relocate embassy to Jerusalem

Paraguayan President Horacio Cartes announced Friday that he intends to relocate Paraguay’s embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem by the end of his term. Cartes pledged the relocation at a celebration marking Israel’s 70th anniversary organized by the Israeli embassy in Paraguay, during which he favorably mentioned his relations with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Cartes said that he is personally committed to initiating the relocation by the end of his term, slated for August 15.

The incoming Paraguayan president, Mario Abdo Benitez, attended the celebration but did not comment on the embassy subject, although he said that Israel and Paraguay are united in a strong friendship and have mutual desire to maintain the relations.

Paraguay expressed its intent to relocate the embassy in March when the South American nation declared it would do so if Netanyahu agreed to visit. Netanyahu visited Latin America last September but did not visit Paraguay, although he met Cartes in Argentina and the two discussed the mutual relations.
