Israeli illegal settlements have tripled in recent months of 2017, compared to the number in the same period last year. According to a report from the Palestinian National Office for the Defense of Land and Resistance of Settlement reveals the striking extent to which occupation authorities under Israeli PM Netanyahu have escalated support to Israeli settlements — which are considered illegal under international law— while allowing the expansion of unlawful settlements built on privately-owned Palestinian land.
Last week, Israeli PM bragged of his administration’s support for the illegal activities while laying the foundation stone for a new 1,000-home in the illegal settlement ‘Beitar Illit’ south of Bethlehem, where 50,000 Zionist settlers live.
All settlements in occupied Palestine are illegal under international law. Palestine will continue to resort to international bodies to hold Israeli occupation accountable for its grave violations of international law throughout occupied Palestine.
About 600,000 Israelis live in over 230 settlements built illegally since the 1967 occupation of the Palestinian territories. The continued expansion of Israeli settlements is one of the major obstacles to the establishment of peace in the Middle East.
Last December, the United Nations passed the Security Council Resolution 2334. The resolution states that Israel’s establishment of settlements in the occupied territories, including occupied East Jerusalem, had no legal validity and urges the regime to immediately and completely cease all its settlement activities.
