President Mahmoud Abbas is scheduled to meet US President Donald Trump’s peace team at the presidential headquarters in Ramallah on Thursday, Jamal Muheisen, member of Fatah Central Committee, said on Wednesday.
He told Voice of Palestine radio that the Palestinians will insist in the meeting on their position that peace talks would not resume unless there is a complete cessation of Israeli settlement construction in the West Bank and East Jerusalem and that term of reference for the peace process has a specific timeline.
The US team includes Jared Kushner, senior advisor to Trump, Jason Greenblatt, special envoy and Dina Powell, deputy National Security advisor.
Addressing the Palestinian National Council’s (PNC) session, Muheisen said Palestinian factions and national figures were holding ongoing meetings to overcome obstacles in the way of convening the PNC as soon as possible with the purpose of reaching a consensus on a new political platform and activating the Palestine Liberation Organization’s (PLO) and its departments.
He pointed out that the PLO factions take seriously the issue of convening PNC despite the opposition of the Islamic Jihad and Hamas movements whom he accused of continuing to consolidate the intra-Palestinian political division.
