PLO Executive Committee Member Dr. Hanan Ashrawi met today with Chargé d’Affaires of the British Consulate in Jerusalem James Downer at the PLO Headquarters in Ramallah.
The two officials discussed the latest international and regional developments, in particular Israel’s blatant disregard for international law and the imperatives of peace.
They also reviewed the latest crisis in Jerusalem and the Al Aqsa Mosque Compound and the persistent Israeli provocations and violations, as well as the critical situation on the ground as a result of the escalation in illegal settlement activities, home demolitions and the use of excessive violence against Palestinians.
In that context, Dr. Ashrawi emphasized that there is a need for positive intervention from the international community to curb Israeli measures and end Israeli impunity.
Dr. Ashrawi also provided an assessment of the American role in attempting to make a “deal” and Palestinian expectations for the upcoming visit of U.S. officials to Palestine.
The 72nd Regular Session of the UN General Assembly in September was also a focus of the discussion, whereby Dr. Ashrawi stressed the need for greater multilateral and international engagement in providing the Palestinian people with protection and the Israeli occupation with accountability, as well as playing the primary role in peacemaking.
In addition, both parties analyzed the internal situation, including matters related to convening a new session of the Palestinian National Council and the steps required to ensure its success and the need for Palestinian reconciliation and free and fair elections.
