China seeks international support for new Israeli-Palestinian peace plan

Beijing/PNN

On Monday China’s U.N. ambassador, Liu Jieyi, urged the international community to support his President Xi Jinping’s new four-point proposal to end the decades-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict and establish an independent Palestinian state.

Jieyi said at a news conference on Monday that China’s future diplomatic efforts will focus on trying to move toward a lasting and negotiated solution based on the four-point proposals.

Jieyi first signaled China’s stepped-up engagement in the Middle East when he met in Beijing with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on July 18, and outlined the proposal.

The four points are:

—Advancing the two-state solution.

—Upholding “the concept of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security” and immediately ending Israeli settlement building.

—Coordinating international efforts to put forward “peace-promoting measures” that entail joint participation.”

—Promoting development and cooperation between the Palestinians and Israelis.

China has distinctive interests in the peace process between Israel and Palestine. While China supports Israel due to their advanced technology market and close relationship with Israel, they are also a supporter of an independent Palestinian state. According to the Diplomat, one of the reasons behind China’s support to Palestine has to due with their image in the Middle East among the other Arab countries.
