PLO Executive Committee Member Dr. Hanan Ashrawi met with President of the Cypriot House of Representatives Demetris Syllouris and his delegation at the PLO Headquarters in Ramallah. The Hon. Syllouris was accompanied by Cypriot Representative Savvas Vladimirou.
Dr. Ashrawi extended her appreciation to the Cypriot Parliament for its consistent backing of Palestine and promotion of Palestinian self-determination and human rights.
The discussion focused on the latest political and regional developments, as well as Israel’s disastrous policies and its ongoing breach of international law and the urgent need for the European Union to exercise the political will necessary to hold Israel accountable, as well as Palestinian moves in the international arena.
In the context of U.S. President Donald Trump’s upcoming visit, Dr. Ashrawi stressed that his vision for peace must be based on international law and conventions and should include concrete terms of reference and objectives and a binding timeline and comprehensive mechanisms to end the military occupation.
Dr. Ashrawi also honored the Palestinian political prisoners on hunger strike for their continued endurance and steadfastness, and she sought support from members of the international community for the prisoners and their nonviolent struggle for their rights and freedom.
The internal situation was discussed, and Dr. Ashrawi emphasized the importance of reconciliation and elections.
At the end of the meeting, both parties reviewed Palestinian-Cypriot relations and issues of mutual interest and emphasized the importance of continuing cooperation in various fields.
