The Media Committee of the Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoners’ society, present the summary of the twenty third day of the collective hunger strike, which was embarked by the prisoners’ movement in the Israeli jails, under the title of “Freedom and Dignity strike” since 17th April, 2017.
-Detainees carry on the battle of freedom and dignity in the Israeli jails, in request for their basic demands which are denied by the prisons’ administration, and which was achieved previously through embarking many hunger strikes. The most prominent demands include: ending the policy of administrative detention, ending the policy of solitary confinement, ending the policy of banning families’ and lawyers’ visits, ending the policy of medical negligence and other legitimate demands.
-A new message from the striking detainee Kareem Younis states: “we assure you that we are going through the strike of freedom and dignity until victory is achieved, where either victory or martyrdom, as there is no life without dignity. We assure the occupation that its tricks and fabrications will not affect us or affect the position and the leadership of Marwan Barghouthi. These fabrications are proof of the feebleness of the prisons’ authority. We also confirm on the role of our people in dealing with the battle by escalating their activities outside prisons at all levels, especially during the aggravation of prisons’ administration to suppress our heroic detainees”.
-On the twenty third day of the strike, detainees suffer from difficulty in movement, pains in the stomach and head, drought in the throat and vomiting blood, where many of them have abstained from drinking water for hours due to the difficulty of going to the toilet.
-Prisons’ administration started to transfer tens of striking detainees at Ramlah prison to the field hospitals.
-Prisons’ administration prevents the lawyer of the Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs from visiting the leader Marwan Barghouthi in his solitary confinement at Jalamah detention center.
-In the first visit to the striking detainees at Nafaha prison, the detainee Mojahed Hamed told the lawyer about tragic details and abusive measures carried out by the administration of prisons since the beginning of the strike, including: forcing detainees to drink hot water from bathroom taps, subjecting them to searches, conducting internal trails, imposing financial sanctions and assaulting them despite the deterioration of their health condition. He also said that jailers attacked every detainee who is unable to stand due to the fatigue during the transferring process.
-The administration of Nafaha prison turned one of the prison sections into a field hospital, to which they transfer detainees whose health conditions deteriorated. There, detainees are being bargained of providing them medical treatment in exchange of ending the strike. Moreover, they deliberately provide food for striking detainees, and also spread rumors aiming at targeting the morale of detainees.
-In Negev prison, the prison administration allocated one water bottle for each 6 detainees, deliberately poured water in front of them and used sniffer dogs to storm the cells. Since 23 days, detainees are wearing the same clothes.
-In Ohilikdar prison, the prison administration turned the clinic into a place of displaying food, in an attempt to influence the striking detainees and bargain them.
-In Ofer prison, the prison administration continues its repressive measures against striking detainees, who were totally deprived of going out the cells for a break.
-The prisons’ administration carries on the collective transfer for striking detainees despite of their difficult situations, where 120 detainees were moved from Nafaha prison to Shatta prison.
-The National Committee for supporting the strike, decided to cancel the partial strike, which was scheduled on Thursday in all cities of the country. It called for people to consider it a day of anger and victory to the detainees on hunger strike. Therefore, the Committee calls upon our people to participate in the activities in all Palestinian cities.
