The Central Elections Commission (CEC) on Thursday said it received a Supreme Court decision issued in its session held in Ramallah, to temporarily halt the Cabinet’s decision to hold local elections until the Court decides on the case raised before it.
In light of this, the CEC announces immediate cessation of all electoral activities which commenced two months ago in adherence to the Court’s decision.
In an official statement, CEC said that the elections stopped “despite CECs’continuous efforts to provide a valid and appropriate electoral environment that enables the holding of transparent elections that meet the respect of the Palestinian people and contribute to end the internal political division.”
The Local elections were supposed to take place on the 8th of October.
This morning, the Hamas rule in the Gaza strip withdrew a Fatah (PLO) list that intended to run for the local elections.
