During the 27th Summit of the Arab League in Mauritania, on Monday, Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki called for issuing a legal document about Britain’s 1917 Balfour Declaration.
On behalf of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Al-Maliki asked the Arab League to assist Palestine in creating a legal file that would address the responsibility of Britain issuing the Balfour Declaration almost 100 years ago.
Further, al-Maliki said in his speech that this declaration “gave people who don’t belong there something that wasn’t theirs.”
The UK government has yet to respond to al-Maliki’s statement.
The 1917 Balfour Declaration was sent as a 67-word statement within a letter sent by the British Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour to Lord Lionel Walter Rothschild. The declaration was acknowledging the establishment of a “national home for Jewish people” in Palestine.
