PLO Executive Committee Member Dr. Hanan Ashrawi met with an official Chilean delegation of Members of Parliament, journalists and Palestinian leaders from the Chilean community yesterday in Ramallah. The delegation was accompanied by the Chilean Representative to the State of Palestine Francisco Javier Bernales Errázuriz.
Ashrawi expressed her appreciation to Chile for its historic ties with Palestine and its continued support of the Palestinian cause and for working to safeguard the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people. The members of the delegation also affirmed their intentions of playing a positive role on behalf of Palestine once they return to Chile.
The meeting included a candid discussion that contextualized the Palestinian narrative in terms of Israel’s deliberate and systematic violations of international law and the immunity it enjoys from the international community; such collusion has shaped the tragic situation that the Palestinian people have suffered from for decades. In that context, Dr. Ashrawi called on the members of the international community to end their preferential treatment of Israel and hold it accountable for its violations of international law and Palestinian human rights.
She Ashrawi stressed the importance of reconciliation and local and governmental elections. She also called for the participation of Palestinian women and youth in the Palestinian political system.
At the end of the meeting, Ashrawi answered questions on future Palestinian moves in the international arena, American aid to Israel, the erosion of the European role, and the status of women in Palestinian society.
