PLO Executive Committee Member Dr. Hanan Ashrawi met with a “Telos Group” delegation of American philanthropists and entrepreneurs at the PLO Headquarters in Ramallah and welcomed them to Palestine.
Dr. Ashrawi provided an assessment of the deteriorating conditions on the ground and Israel’s persistent violations of international law and collective punitive measures including Israel’s use of live ammunition, summary executions of Palestinian civilians, expansion and intensification of the illegal settlement enterprise, the continued annexation of Palestinian land, the increase in home demolitions, and the revocation of Jerusalem IDs, among other violations.
Both parties agreed that the U.S. Congress has been detrimental to the prospects for peace, and emphasized the need for the American public to courageously speak out against the abuse of American funds and weapons and to call on the U.S. administration to exhibit the political will necessary to hold Israel accountable and to end the military occupation.
Dr. Ashrawi discussed the importance of multilateral engagement and the involvement of the P5+1 and Arab countries. In that context, she welcomed the French initiative and stressed that the international peace conference should be based on clear terms of reference and objectives, a binding timeline and concrete steps to end the occupation, as well as mechanisms for arbitration, monitoring and evaluation.
Dr. Ashrawi also answered questions on the role of Palestinian women and youth, the importance of good governance and rule of law in Palestine, and the prospects for peace in light of the precariousness of the two-state solution.
