Statement by the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Mr. Nickolay Mladenov, on the apparent extra-judicial execution of a Palestinian assailant in Hebron in the occupied West Bank

 Jerusalem, 25 March 2016

“I strongly condemn yesterday’s apparent extra-judicial execution of a Palestinian assailant in Hebron in the occupied West Bank. This was a gruesome, immoral and unjust act that can only fuel more violence and escalate an already volatile situation.

I welcome the condemnation by the Israeli Minister of Defence and call on the authorities to swiftly bring to justice the perpetrator who has already been detained.

It is time to stop the negative spiral of violence and to begin positive steps towards ending the occupation and bringing long overdue peace and security to the people of Israel and Palestine.”

On Thursday, March 25, two Palestinians were killed by the Israeli occupation forces after allegedly stabbing and injuring an Israeli soldier in the Tel Rumeida area of Hebron’s Old City.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health identified the two Palestinian youths as Ramzi Aziz al-Qasrawi, 21, and Abed al-Fattah Yusri al-Sharif, 21.

In graphic footage released by Israeli human rights group B’Tselem, an Israeli soldier is seen shooting al-Sharif in the head after he had already been injured and left, motionless, without any medical assistance, on the ground for minutes.
The footage shows medical teams treating the moderately injured Israeli soldier while ignoring the dying Palestinian youths, while the second shooting of al-Sharif takes place in plain view of the medical team and other Israeli soldiers who did not react to the his execution.
