PLO Executive Committee Member Dr. Hanan Ashrawi, on Thursday met with Greek Consul General Georgios Zacharioudakis at the PLO Headquarters in Ramallah.
Mr. Zacharioudakis requested to meet with Dr. Ashrawi to discuss her statement on the tripartite alliance by Cyprus, Greece and Israel and to stress that such an alliance does not affect Greece’s historical relationship with Palestine.
In that context, Dr. Ashrawi said, “Israel will exploit this trilateral agreement to gain further access to and influence in the EU and to intensify its oppressive occupation policies against the Palestinian people. It has become even more imperative for Greece to recognize Palestine officially and to increase all forms of cooperation with Palestine.”
Both parties reaffirmed the historical Palestinian-Greek ties and agreed to work together in all areas to prevent any damage to these relations.
Yesterday Dr. Ashrawi addressed a visiting delegation of women in the CDU/CSU faction of the German Parliament.
In the meeting, which was organized by Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, Dr. Ashrawi provided a thorough assessment of Israel’s violations and its systematic efforts to destroy the chances of peace and stability. In her analysis of the EU Council Conclusions on the Middle East Process and the anti-settlement guidelines, Dr. Ashrawi called on Germany and the rest of the EU to take concrete steps to hold Israel accountable, to end the occupation and to support the establishment of an independent and viable Palestinian state on 1967 borders.
The political discussion included the status of reconciliation, and Dr. Ashrawi stressed the need for free and fair elections in Palestine.
The visiting delegation requested an assessment on women’s standing in Palestine, and Dr. Ashrawi gave a presentation on the history of the Palestinian women’s struggle, the achievements of women in Palestine, and Palestinian efforts to safeguard human rights and freedoms, as well as establishing a democratic system based on good governance.
