China has lent its support to the establishment of the State of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital and that such state should be established based on the 1967 borders and enjoy full sovereignty.
Chinese President Xi Jinping made the remarks during an address at the Arab League’s headquarters in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, on Thursday.
He also announced a $7.6mn grant for a solar power project to improve Palestinians’ well-being.
Speaking for the first time at Arab League headquarters in Egypt, Xi Jinping stressed that the “Palestinian issue should not be marginalized” and that an stabilized Palestine is crucial to the peace in the Middle East.
He also urged the international community to contribute to the resumption of Israel-Palestinian talks, which have been broken off in April 2014 due to different issues.
“China firmly supports the Middle East peace process and supports the establishment of a State of Palestine enjoying full sovereignty on the basis of the 1967 borders and with East Jerusalem as its capital. We are in favor of putting in place a new mechanism to promote peace as to the Middle East question, and support efforts made by the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation toward this end”, Xi told the Arab League’s delegates.
Also Thursday, China signed investment and aid deals worth billions of dollars with Egypt during Xi’s visit and expressed support for Cairo’s efforts to maintain stability, which have included a crackdown on dissent.
