Yesterday, PLO Executive Committee Member Dr. Hanan Ashrawi met with United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Nickolay Mladenov and his team at the PLO Headquarters.
Dr. Ashrawi provided an assessment of the disastrous conditions on the ground that include the escalation of extra-judicial executions, the use of live and illegal ammunition, the detention of Palestinian men, women and children, illegal settlement activities in and around Jerusalem, home demolitions, and the revocation of Jerusalem IDs, and said: “Our objective is to keep our people on the land and to counter their vulnerability in the face of Israeli violations and unilateral measures.”
She also stressed, “It is imperative for members of the international community, including the P5+1 and Arab nations, to think outside the box and host an international conference with terms of reference, clear criteria and concrete steps and proscriptions against all Israeli violations of international law.
Such an initiative would send a collective message to the Palestinian people that the international community is undertaking its responsibilities towards Palestine and attempting to undo some of the historical injustice that befell the Palestinian people since 1947—the American monopoly over peacemaking has not produced any positive results; rather, it has enabled Israel to persist in its unilateralism, violations and impunity.”
She continued, “If the Quartet wants to make a difference, it must adopt a new mandate, policy plan and language, and it should be expanded to include other countries.
The UN can also participate constructively by actually implementing its mandate on global peace and security, beginning with a UNSC resolution on all forms of settlement activities and bringing Israel to compliance with international law and UN resolutions.
In that context, we are formulating a serious plan of joining international agencies and organizations and acceding to international conventions and agreements; this will empower our people and help us achieve the goal of providing protection for the Palestinian people.”
Both parties reviewed the latest internal conditions and regional developments, including reunification and democratic elections, as well as steps to relieve Gaza and lift the siege in order to enable genuine reconstruction.
Dr. Ashrawi and Mr. Mladenov also agreed to stay engaged on all relevant issues pertaining to domestic, regional and international developments.
