Erekat slams Israeli incitement against Abbas

PNN/ Ramallah/

During the past week, there have been an increase in Israeli attacks against the Sanctity of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound. PLO Secretary General, Saeb Erekat said that by accusing President Abbas of incitement regarding recent violence in Occupied Jerusalem, Israel, the occupying power “continues to justify its violations of international law, including: colonization, forced displacement, violent attacks and other crimes against the land and people of Palestine.”

Israeli officials have falsely claimed that President Abbas used the expression “Jews’ filthy feet” while referring to those extremists that stormed The Al-Aqsa Mosque Compound last week. President Abbas used the expression “Filthy feet” referring to the extremist gangs, protected by Israeli Forces, who stormed the Holy Compound, destroying windows, doors and attacking Muslim worshippers, Erekat  said.

He added that the Israeli government is enthusiastically trying to turn the Question of Palestine into a religious war; a narrative that we do not, and will not, accept. We will continue to seek all necessary legal and diplomatic paths, towards ending Israel’s colonization and occupation of Palestine.

“Dozens of Christian and Muslim holy sites have been attacked by Israel since its creation. This is fueled by the impunity the Israeli government grants to the attackers, as well as by the political use of religion,” Erekat said. “The Israeli government defends settlement expansion and other Israeli crimes as part of a “divine mandate” and by quoting religious books and using religious narrative.”

Erekat finally called upon the international community to assume its responsibility to protect the Palestinian people and their Holy Sites and to take concrete steps to end the Israeli occupation of Palestine.
