PLO Executive Committee Member Dr. Hanan Ashrawi met with French Consul General Hervé Magro at the PLO Headquarters in Ramallah. Both parties discussed the grave and volatile situation in Jerusalem and Israel’s violent assault on Al-Haram Al-Sharif and its worshipers. Given the current deteriorating situation on the ground, Dr. Ashrawi stressed the need for immediate international intervention: “There is an urgent need for rapid and effective engagement from the international community because Israel’s policies and practices constitute a serious threat to the entire region.”
In addition to discussing issues of mutual concern and cooperation, Dr. Ashrawi and Mr. Magro reviewed the recent French-Palestinian Prime Ministerial and Ministerial meetings that took place in Paris last week in which significant agreements in several areas were signed.
Dr. Ashrawi provided an assessment of the preparatory steps required to ensure the success of future Palestinian National Council meetings and of reconciliation among Palestinian political parties.
The meeting also focused on recent EU ministers’ meetings, French ideas and initiatives, and the Quartet. In that context, Dr. Ashrawi said: “The Quartet’s configuration has not led to any breakthroughs, and it has not served the cause for peace. It is time to expand the Quartet and modify its mandate, structure and policies.”
