UN Special Coordinator for the ME Peace Process on escalating tensions in Jerusalem

After the clashes between the Palestinians and  a number of Israeli soldiers stormed the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem yesterday, 13 September 2015,  the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Mr. Nickolay Mladenov, released a statement saying that he is very concerned about the “ provocations and violence in and around the Holy Sites of the Old City of Jerusalem.”  

He also called on the political and religious leaders to “have a responsibility to act against extremists, who undermine the rule of law.” And he encouraged everyone to “stand firmly against incitement and violence, especially during the sensitive period of the Jewish High Holy Days and ahead of the Muslim Eid al-Adha.”

He added that he take note of the statement by the Prime Minister of Israel that the status quo at the Holy Sites will be maintained.”
