Qassam Brigades man killed in tunnel collapse east of Gaza city

A member of the Qassam Brigades, military wing of Hamas was killed in the early hours of Friday morning when one of the resistance tunnels collapsed east of Gaza City.

According to a statement issued by the Qassam Brigades, the young man, Essam Ketnana (22) was killed after the collapse of one of Hamas’ resistance tunnels east of Gaza City.

Gaza tunnels are often very dangerous to navigate and structurally unstable, with regular collapses reported.

This is in addition to the fact that both Egypt and Israel bomb any suspected tunnels. The Egyptian army reported on 25 May that it had destroyed 521 tunnels from Gaza in the last six months.

As well as military support, Gaza tunnels provide an estimated 7,000 Gazans with a living, albeit an insecure one, according to Al Jazeera. The network of tunnels are essential to the survival of Gazan businesses as foods, medicines and people are smuggled through- accounting for approximately $700 million annually (from a 2012 report).
